There are different causes for lung / respiratory infections and one common type of cause are known to be viruses, bacteria, and other micro organisms. Even the most common respiratory diseases such as Rhinitis more commonly called as common head cold and Tracheobronchitis or chest cold are cause by these small but terrible micro organisms, viruses, and bacteria.

Below are some of the most known micro organisms that attack the respiratory-system or the lungs:
- Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, and Hemophilus are the types of bacteria species that most commonly cause diseases in the respiratory-system. The diseases vary from Bronchitis, Sinusitis, Strep Throat, Tonsillitis, Whooping cough, Pharyngitis, and Pneumonia.
- Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a type of bacillus can cause tuberculosis.
- Pathogenic fungi can cause pneumonialike fungus diseases such as Coccidioidomycosis, Histoplasmosis, and Blastomycosis.
- Lung fluke flatworms can cause Paragonimiasis.
- Tape worm can cause Echinococcosis.
- Pneumocystis carnii protozoans can cause pneumonia.
- Mycoplasma pneumonia, a micro organism can cause sinusitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, and mycoplasmal pneumonia.
- Legionella pneumonphila, a bacterium can cause Legionella disease which is a type of pneumonia.
- Rickettsiae, a micro organism that can cause Q fever, rocky mountain spotted fever, typhus and other diseases that include the respiratory track.
